Every year, Art House Dallas assembles a beautiful reader featuring visual art, poetry, prose, and book excerpts oriented around a single theme. The readers are made to be used for discussion in small reading groups, and this year, we are honored to have artists from our community featured, and to partner in the launch of the Origin Reader, On Mortality.
For the opening of this year's ORIGIN series, Art House Dallas is delighted to host author, professor, and Tolkien expert, Matthew Dickerson for an evening conversation exploring mortality and vocation through the lens of J.R.R. Tolkien's short story Leaf by Niggle. With so much money and effort invested in attempting to lengthen the span of human life even to the extreme point of one day possibly eliminating death altogether, it is wise to return to simpler questions that remind us of what it means to be human and what it means to flourish in a created world where all things die. What value then does human creativity and art have in the shadow of death and mortality? And further to the point, what does mortality have to do with art and its appreciation?
